Malaysian based LCC AirAsia X has its sights on Sydney as
its next International destination if it can obtain Malaysian government
approval.
AirAsia Chief Executive Mr Azran Osman Rani said “Sydney is
a priority for the airline due to the large demand for direct flights from
Kuala Lumpur to Sydney and that currently Malaysians travelling to Sydney need
to travel via Singapore or Bangkok.”
“Today MAS flies 14 times per week to Sydney, compared with
Singapore’s Changi Airport, there are 52 weekly flights connecting Singapore
and Sydney, this shows that Sydney is the singularly biggest route Malaysia is
losing out on a lot of demand because people are flying to Sydney via
Singapore.
AirAsiaX has been requesting Malaysian government approval
to fly into Sydney since 2009 however, Mr Osman believes the airlines next request
to fly the Kuala Lumpur to Sydney route will be successful since a new collaborative
agreement between Malaysia Airlines (MAS) and AirAsia and Air Asia X was agreed
last year.
The Airline is planning to operate flights from Kuala Lumpur
to Beijing and Shanghai is only waiting on approval from the Chinese government
for these flight can become reality.
