TSA Expands Screening Policy for Carry on Electronics

The U.S. Transport Security Administration (TSA) have announced new policy on that came into effect on Saturday 4th August 2007 regarding the screening of carry on electronics for all flights, which will require all passengers who carry on full size video game consoles and DVD players to remove these items from carry on and have them scanned separately, as in the current laptop screening policy.

The TSA website stipulates that only full size game consoles (Playstation 2 & 3, X-box, Nintendo, e.t.c.) and DVD players require separate screening (along with laptops), and that this new policy does not include small electronic items, so no you should not need to remove your smaller MP3 players, iPods, or portable game systems.

Over the past few days I have heard of several passengers being asked to remove ALL electronics, I am sure this is not policy and just the TSA officers adapting to the new policy. In reality though I just wonder how many passengers carry on full size video game consoles, or DVD players (non portable)? it’s not like they can be used in-flight, most passengers check these items in, so I am not expecting too much disruption because of this policy.

Information about this policy along with the removal of the ban on carry on lighters can be found here: TSA: New Policies for Lighters, Game Consoles and Breast Milk
