The Transportation Security
Administration (TSA) and leading laptop case manufactures are in the process of
developing standards that could see the end of having to take a laptop out of
your laptop case, for x-ray scanning at airport security checkpoints. If initial
tests of prototype laptop cases are successful, we will begin seeing security
checkpoint friendly laptop cases on the market within 3-4 months.
Manufacturers
such as Belkin, Samsonite, Skooba, Targus and Wegner have made submissions and plan
to submit prototypes, for the first round of prototype testing in early June.
Initial
TSA requirements to manufactures specifed checkpoint friendly cases and bags provide an unobstructed X-ray scan of the passenger’s laptop, which means no
cables, etc between the x-ray and laptop, to achieve this requirement many security
checkpoint friendly case designs are believed to revolve around a clamshell
design, with one side of the shell for the laptop and the other shell for the
passengers documents, cables, etc.
Before
scanning the passenger would open the clam shell then lay the open shell on the
scanning belt to allow an unobstructed scan.
