Flew out of Swampy on Saturday headed for the U.S. via Taiwan.
At
Swampy, didn't see hardly anyone at the check-in counter, including the
airline staff, wearing masks... But when I got to the immigration
(outbound) counter, all the officers there were wearing masks... making
it even more difficult than usual to figure out what the H they are
saying...
In
my airline's lounge, waiting, pretty much no one was wearing masks....
But by the time we got on the airplane, I'd say more than half of the
passengers on the flight to Taiwan, including myself, wore masks during
the entire flight. The EVA flight crew, however, did not.
Almost
everyone was wearing the simple, single cloth or paper layer type
masks... My nurse GF got me a fancy N95 mask that is supposed to be
more effective at stopping incoming stuff. Let me tell you, that is not
a fun or comfortable mask to wear for hours at a stretch...and I
haven't even done the long leg from Taipei to L.A. yet.
At the
Taipei airport, it was quite different. A lot of the airport staff
around and even the girls working in the gift and duty free shops were
wearing masks....
Interestingly, the EVA flight had a single
page handout from the Taiwan CDC with various recommendations relating
to the flu, including to monitor your temperature daily for 7 days
after your flight, and if you notice anything abnormal, to put that
mask back on and head for the doctor.
Throughout the flight, on
the TV displays, they were airing a cartoon video about the flu in
which animated characters talk about staying healthy and what to do if
you have a fever or cough or, as they put it, some problem at the other
end, and then in a talk bubble, they showed the word 'poo"... I don't
think the video ever mentioned the flu, but it was a nicely done,
non-alarmist piece that did a good job of reminding folks of what they
ought to do.
Didn't encounter any of the thermal scanners on my
way out of Swampy, or upon arrival at Taipei. I wouldn't expect them to
be used outbound at Swampy... But I haven't gone to the gate yet here
in Taipei, so dunno how that part will go yet.
Lucky to be
flying the day after the flu deal bursts out in Thailand... Just hope I
can survive a week in Los Angeles and make it back home in good health.
Brought along a good supply of alcohol based hand sanitizer. And no
french kissing till I get back home to BKK....
